The Power of Prayer

Picture the scene where these words in Philippians 4:6 were actually written. It's not a sunny study with a cup of coffee and a view of the garden. It's a Roman prison. Paul is chained, quite literally, to a soldier. He doesn't know if the next knock on the door brings his release or his execution. The floor is cold, the future is uncertain, and by every earthly measure this is a man who has every right to lie awake at night eaten alive by worry. And yet from that cell, in those chains, with a guard at his side, Paul picks up his pen and writes, "Do not be anxious about anything." Think about that. The most peaceful words in the whole letter come from the least peaceful place. This isn't a man giving advice from a comfortable chair. This is a prisoner handing free people a key he found in the dark. And this morning I want you to take that key, because whatever you carried in here today, Paul has been somewhere harder, and he learned something in that cell that most of us have never learned in our comfort.
