I A Condemnation of the False Teachers
1 The Arguments Against God’s Judgment are Apparently Rational
They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” (4)
2 The Arguments Against God’s Judgment are Ultimately Moral
Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. (v 3)
The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, (Rom 1:18)
3 The Arguments Against God’s Judgment are Tragically Fatal
6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. (V 6-7)
II A Caution for the Unrepentant
1 God is Exceedingly Patient with Sinners
A This patience is rooted in His love
B This patience is displayed in His delay.
2 God is not Indefinitely Patient with Sinners
“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed” (2 Pet. 3:10).
A Jesus will certainly come.
B Jesus will Suddenly come.
III A Challenge to the Church
11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives
A We Should be a People Whose Priorities Reflect our Beliefs
B We Should be a People Whose Lives Radiate the Gospel
C Our Hearts should Long for His Coming
