O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight
For Christ is born of Mary And gathered all above While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together Proclaim thy holy birth And praises sing to God the King And peace to men on earth
O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by

Micah 5:2
But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,
who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to be ruler in Israel,
whose coming forth is from of old,
from ancient days.
Why Bethlehem was chosen

9 So the two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. And when they came to Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them. And the women said, “Is this Naomi?” 20 She said to them, “Do not call me Naomi;[a] call me Mara,[b] for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. 21 I went away full, and the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi, when the Lord has testified against me and the Almighty has brought calamity upon me?” 22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabite her daughter-in-law with her, who returned from the country of Moab. And they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest. Ruth 1:19-22
2 Bethlehem was a royal city
Bethlehem is where David was Born
Jesus is a descendant of David and yet, Jesus created David because Jesus is Lord and Jesus is king
3 Bethlehem’s size
God loves to take those who are unimportant and choose the most unlikely place to reveal himself.
The littleness of Bethlehem signifies that God is gentle and lowly in heart.
4 Bethlehem's location.
1 It was close to the Shepherds.
2 It was close to temple sheep
Two lessons
1 God is the God of surprises.
2 The Humility of God
But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being[d] might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him[e] you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 1 Cor. 1:27-31
