Someone said, tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are. In Jesus case, his identity and character transformed the ones he gathered and called apostles from "outs" to "ins." They were messed up guys, weak, doubtful, not special but something happened when Jesus gathered them. What he did to them and through them he continues to do through the church.
