Psalm 25: A Model of Prayer
Psalm 25:1–10
“To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in You…”
I. David Knows the FOCUS of Prayer
Psalm 25:1:
“To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul.”
A. David knew WHERE to go to find help
“To You, O LORD…”
1. OUR resources
2. OTHER people's resources
3. GOD’S resources
Psalm 121:1–2 “I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my
help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.”
B. David knew HOW to come to receive help
David says:
“To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul.”
II. David Understands the FOUNDATION of Prayer
Psalm 25:2–3:
“O my God, I trust in You; let me not be ashamed; let not my enemies
triumph over me. Indeed, let no one who waits on You be ashamed; Let
those be ashamed who deal treacherously without cause.”
A. Prayer is more than WHAT you do; it is WHY you do it
1. Prayer is more than MEANINGLESS ACTIVITY
2. Prayer is the COMMUNICATION of the attitude of the heart
David says:
“I trust in You.”
B. The REWARD of prayer exceeds the WORK of prayer
III. David Recognizes the FRUIT of Prayer
Psalm 25:4–5:
“Show me Your ways, O LORD; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your
truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all
the day.”
A. Prayer TRANSFORMS us
1. Prayer changes US, not just things
2. Prayer changes the INSIDE before the outside
B. The process of prayer shows God's WAYS, leads to His TRUTH, and teaches His LIFE
Look at David's progression:
1. “Show me”
“Show me Your ways, O LORD.”
2. “Teach me”
“Teach me Your paths.”
3. “Lead me”
“Lead me in Your truth…”
IV. David Experiences the FORCE of Prayer
Psalm 25:6–7:
“Remember, O LORD, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses, for
they are from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my
transgressions; according to Your mercy remember me, for Your goodness'; sake, O LORD.”
A. David establishes God's HEART of forgiveness
B. David remembers God's HISTORY of forgiveness
C. David receives God's HAND of forgiveness
David asks:
“According to Your mercy remember me.”
V. David Knows the FUTURE of Prayer
Psalm 25:8–10:
“Good and upright is the LORD; Therefore He teaches sinners in the way.
The humble He guides in justice, And the humble He teaches His way. All
the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth, To such as keep His covenant
and His testimonies.”
A. Because God is UPRIGHT, He cannot ignore sin; but because He is
GOOD, He forgives sin
“Good and upright is the LORD.”
B. Because God is MERCIFUL, He loves us; because He is FAITHFUL, He teaches us
David says: “All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth.”
