I Kings 19:3-5 “Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in
Judah, and he left his servant there. 4 Then he went on alone into the wilderness,
traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die.
“I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors
who have already died.”
Stats: An estimated 1 out of every 10 Americans will deal with some form of
depression.
40 million adults or 18% of the adult American population deals with some
kind of anxiety disorder.
How did Elijah go from devotion to depression?
1. WEAR yourself out
2. SHUT others out
1 Kings 19:3-4a “he left his servant there. 4 Then he went on alone into the wilderness”
3. STRESS yourself out
1 Kings 19:5 “I’ve had enough. I’m no better than my ancestors.”
1 Kings 19:10 “I’m the only one left who is serving you”
“Never add doom to your gloom.” - Pastor Gerald Brooks
What do you do when you find yourself struggling with the dark side of emotions?
1. REMIND
Jude 1:20 “But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in
the Holy Spirit.”
2. REFUEL
1 Kings 19:5-6 “Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was
sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” 6 He looked around and
there beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he
ate and drank and lay down again.
1 Kings 19:7 Then the angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up
and eat some more, or the journey ahead will be too much for you.”
Psalm 34:17 “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all
their troubles.”
Psalm 40:2-3 “2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my
feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a
hymn of praise to our God.”
Psalm 3:3 “But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head
high.”
Psalm 42:11 “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your
hope in God...”
Romans 8:31 “if God is for us who can be against us.”
3. REENGAGE
1 Kings 19:15-16 “The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the
Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 Also,
anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel
Meholah to succeed you as prophet.”
