Day 1: Born Into the Family

Reading: 1 John 5:1-2

Devotional: There are approximately 8.3 billion people on this earth, and God knows every single one of his children by name. That is not a small thing. To believe that Jesus is the Christ is to be born of God, adopted into a family that spans every nation, language, and generation. And family carries obligation. To love the Father is to love his children. This is not optional sentiment. It is the family resemblance of those who have been genuinely transformed by God's love. Today, consider who in your life bears the mark of that same family, and ask whether your love for them reflects the love of the Father who first claimed you.

Day 2: Obedience as Evidence, Not Earning

Reading: 1 John 3:23 and Galatians 5:13-14

Devotional: John makes a distinction that is easy to miss but impossible to overstate. Obedience does not produce God's love. God's love produces obedience. His commands are not a burden placed on those trying to earn their way into his favor. They are the natural outgrowth of a heart already changed by grace. Paul echoes this in Galatia, urging believers to use their freedom not as license for sin but as fuel for love. The two commands John and Paul both return to are the same: believe in Christ and love one another. When obedience feels heavy, it is worth asking whether fear has replaced love as the driving force in your faith.

Day 3: Faith That Overcomes

Reading: 1 John 5:3-4 and Romans 8:38-39

Devotional: The world will press against you. It always has and it always will. But John's declaration is not cautious or qualified. Every child of God defeats this evil world, and the means of that victory is faith. Not perfection. Not immunity from suffering. Faith. Paul, writing from a place of profound personal hardship, declared with equal certainty that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God found in Christ Jesus. These are not the words of men who had easy lives. They are the words of men who had tested the promise and found it unbreakable. Your faith is not wishful thinking. It is the ground on which victory has already been secured.

Day 4: The Whole Saving Mission of Jesus

Reading: 1 John 5:5-8 and Matthew 3:16-17

Devotional: John will not allow anyone to separate who Jesus is from what Jesus did. The water of his baptism and the blood of his cross are not two unrelated events. They are the beginning and the completion of one unbroken mission. At his baptism, the Father declared his Son publicly. At the cross, that Son gave everything. The Spirit bears witness to both, confirming in the hearts of believers what history recorded in time. To diminish the cross is to misunderstand the Son. To misunderstand the Son is to lose the salvation he purchased. Hold both together. The one who was revealed in water is the same one who bled for you, and the Spirit testifies that it is true.

Day 5: Living as a Child of God

Reading: 1 John 5:9 and Luke 15:20-24

Devotional: God has already testified concerning his Son. The case is not pending. The verdict is not in question. What remains is how we live in light of what has already been declared. The father in the parable of the prodigal son did not wait for an explanation before running. He ran because love does not calculate the distance before it moves. That same love has claimed you, named you, and equipped you to face the world without fear. This week, live as what you already are. Believe Christ. Love the family of God. Obey the Father. And face whatever comes with the settled confidence that the one who overcame the world has already done so on your behalf.
