John's whole testimony of Jesus is the Messiah, the Anointed One of God! And the religious leaders knew fully well that the people will stone them if they say that John's message was from men. They were full of hypocrisy. This is why Jesus didn't give them a reply. He knew that they were all crooked, cringing hypocrites! They even lied and said, "We can't tell!"  They knew the answer, they just wouldn’t say!
