Baptism

Baptism is a picture of what Jesus has done in our lives. It represents the fact that the old you is dead and a new you has begun. Romans 6:3–4 says, “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead… we too may live a new life.” When you go down into the water, you are identifying with the death and burial of Jesus. You are saying, “The person I used to be is no longer in charge.” The old patterns, the old identity, the old way of living, and the life that was separated from God are being left behind. Baptism doesn’t mean that the water magically changes you. Jesus has already changed you. Baptism is your public declaration that you belong to Him. Going down into the water is a picture that the old life is dead.

But that’s not where the story ends. When you come up out of the water, it represents resurrection and new life. Second Corinthians 5:17 says, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” You aren’t simply becoming a slightly improved version of the old you. God is making you new. Your past doesn’t have to determine your future. Your failures don’t have to define you. Your identity is now found in Christ. Coming up out of the water is a picture that a new life has begun.

And this new life is meant to be lived differently. Galatians 5:25 says, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Baptism isn’t just about what happens in the water; it’s about what happens after you come out of the water. The goal isn’t simply to experience a moment with God. The goal is to learn how to live the rest of your life following Jesus and being led by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will teach you how to love differently, forgive differently, make decisions differently, resist temptation, and walk in the purpose God has for your life. You don’t have to figure this new life out by yourself. The same Spirit who gives you new life will teach you how to live that new life.

So today, as you go into the water, remember this: the old you is dead, the new you is alive, and the Holy Spirit is going to lead you forward. Baptism is a picture that you are leaving the old life behind and stepping into a whole new level of life with Christ. You aren’t saying that you will never make another mistake or that you are suddenly perfect. You are saying that Jesus is now Lord of your life, and you are choosing to follow Him. You are moving forward with Jesus, being led by the Holy Spirit, and becoming everything God has called you to be.
