Planted: Ancient Christian Roots for a Restless Generation

"In an era of constant change, many of us feel like 'tumbleweeds'—appearing free as we roll along, but actually dry, disconnected, and at the mercy of every shifting wind. We’ve traded the cultivation of the past for the 'deconstruction' of the present, leaving a generation feeling anxious and isolated. But what if the secret to moving forward is actually looking back? Today, we’re exploring how to stop drifting and start growing by planting ourselves in the 'ancient soil' of the Christian faith. From the wisdom of the Church Fathers to the steadying trellis of the Great Tradition, learn how to become an unshakeable oak tree in a restless world. Let’s dive in to 'Planted: Ancient Christian Roots for a Restless Age'."

Episode Notes

The Modern Shift

  • From Progress to Deconstruction: We transitioned from the 20th-century focus on building ("EPCOT") to the 21st-century focus on tearing down the garden.

  • The "Tumbleweed" State: Many in the current generation appear free but are actually "slaves to the restless winds of relativism".

  • The Emotional Toll: This lack of roots results in a generation that is increasingly angry, anxious, empty, and isolated.

The Architecture of Faith

  • The Great Tradition: Defined as holding to that which has been believed "everywhere, always, and by all".

  • The Vine & Trellis:

    • The Vertical Post: The Bible is the primary support; nothing not in Scripture is required for salvation.

    • The Grid: The "Great Tradition" (Creeds, Church Fathers, Liturgy) provides the structure to keep the vine from growing wild or being twisted.

  • Historical Wisdom: We should view the Bible through the lens of the "Great Tradition," treating the Church Fathers like spiritual grandparents.

Practicing the Presence

  • Time Management: Moving from Chronos (chronological time) to Kairos (God’s sacred time).

  • Daily Rhythms: Keeping Kairos by following the Christian calendar and using tools like the Venite app or Lectio 365 for daily prayer.

  • The Goal: Shifting focus away from our own story and onto the story of God.

The Final Stand

  • No Reinvention Needed: Jude 3 calls believers to "contend" for a faith that was delivered "once for all," not to make it up as they go.

  • A Permanent Home: The Church, founded by Christ and the Apostles, serves as a forever home rather than a temporary "Church of the Moment".

  • Unshakeable Life: Anchoring in ancient soil makes a person an oak by "streams of living water," standing firm against destructive forces.
