I.N.R.I. “I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him;” Do you really believe that you can’t believe? American Christianity has twisted God’s written Word and shelved the work of the Holy Spirit for it’s decision theology. Pridefully it boasts that it has decided to follow Jesus. Elevating its own human spirit, it has little need for God the Holy Spirit daily and richly calling by the Gospel, enlightening with His gifts, sanctifying and keeping us in the true one faith within the local Christian Church. Trusting in man’s own reason and strength to decide for Jesus and follow Him, many Christians have no need for the Holy Spirit’s daily and rich comfort of forgiveness spoken in the local congregation. In truth those who refuse to acknowledge the depth of human depravity and sin take offense when a called and ordained servant of Christ’s Word speaks the words of absolution. “How can a man forgive sins?”They complain as they trust in their doubt and own strength to overcome their sin.
False teachers have no need of God the Holy Spirit to bring to our remembrance all that Jesus has spoken and taught through His apostles. They wrongly imagine follow a spirit that leads them to follow their own feelings and desires in the name of love. They claim to be following the Holy Spirit and not the written Word of God. Jesus exposes their devotion to an evil spirit, the fallen spirit of the Liar and Murderer - the devil. Jesus teaches us, Joh 14:21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him." God the Holy Spirit sanctifies us in the Truth of God’s Word. He teaches and leads us in love through God’s Holy Ten Commandments.
False teachers pervert God the Holy Spirit into a divine cheerleader or coach. Trusting in themselves they imagine the Holy Spirit sits on the sidelines cheering them on while they do the hard work of living the Christian life. They think that they must discover what’s true for them by themselves. They don’t believe the cannot believe. They don’t trust that God the Holy Spirit constantly calls them by the gospel, enlightens them with His gifts - baptism, absolution, the Sacrament of the Altar - sanctifies and keeps them in the one true faith in Jesus through His Word.
False teachers imagine they have the Holy Spirit if they excite themselves into a frenzy to begin babbling unintelligible words. They imagine a revival is happening when emotions are stirred and people sing catchy praise songs for hours on end. Such babbling isn’t the work of God the Holy Spirit - it is the work of the spirit of disobedience - Satan masquerading as an angel of light.

I. The true Church had dwindled down to a congregation of eight. A micro minority in a world populated upwards of 11 billion people. Our Creator was moved to judgment. Commanding Noah to build an ark to preserve the true church and a male and female of every living kind of air breathing land dwelling animals. Noah and the Church preached repent and believe the promise for 120 years while the ark was built. No one listened. No one repented. Everyone laughed at crazy Noah building a ship on dry land. The door was shut. The flood came. The truth of this world wide flood is written in geology, biology, and the fossil layers of millions of dead things buried in rock layers laid down by water all over the earth.
After the year long worldwide flood, the Lord God remembered Noah and dried out our world. Noah offered a sacrifice faithfully clinging to God’s Promise to Adam of Christ Jesus’ sacrifice for all human sin. History records, Gen 8:21-9:1 And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, "I will never again curse the ground for man's sake, although the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done. (22) "While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease." (9:1) So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.”
From the four married couples preserved on the ark, the world began to be repopulated. Within three generations after the flood, upwards of 30,000 human beings were born. The Lord God had blessed Noah and his sons within His Church telling them to have children and fill the earth. Man again rebels against the Word of his Creator. (Vs.1) Language isn’t an invention of man, it is the gift of God. Human beings are created language beings. Language is hardwired into our brains. On the day our first father Adam and our mother Eve were created in God’s image they understood, spoke, and wrote in human language. A unified language was God’s gift to mankind.
The sinful imagination of man’s heart is evil from its conception. Fallen mankind twists God’s blessings to rebel against God’s Word. (Vs. 2-4). A false church arose, under Ham’s grandson Nimrod. Nimrod was a great hunter. He hunted men, to enslave them under his tyranny to build a ‘name for himself.’ The True Church of Shem was oppressed the false church of Nimrod - as it sought its own glory and power. The false church misused technology to storm the gates of heaven.
Many ancient cities in Iran and Iraq were built from sun dried brick. At Babel they fired their bricks to harden them against the elements. Then instead of mud for mortar they used asphalt. At great expense and work they were building a waterproof, fireproof tower to storm heaven. They were certain that God’s judgment couldn’t reach them with another world wide flood or fire from heaven.
The Lord God commanded them to fill the earth, the false church, wanted to keep them in this one place in a city fortified against God for their own glory and name. Many now run in fear of artificial intelligence, a tool God has given for mankind. It isn’t A.I. that is evil it is the imagination of man’s heart from conception. God the Holy Spirit teaches us to fear, love, and trust in God above all things. Technology is a blessing to serve and help our neighbor as we run in the path of God’s commandments. When we pervert God’s gift to selfish prideful service of self - we follow the devil’s lie that we can be our own gods. The lying spirit and his false church promote only murder and death.
II. Language isn’t evil, but sinful mankind perverts God’s gift of language to make a name for itself seizing power to enslave fellow mankind. Satan loves to twist language. The father of lies is the master of double speak - he calls sin good, and good he labels evil. He twists language to enslave people in the lie that a male is a female, and a female is a male. Jesus the Truth breaths forth the Holy Spirit - the Spirit of Truth teaching, Mat 19:4-6 And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,' (5) and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH' ? (6) So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." Marriage is defined by our Creator’s Word - not by the demonic lies of our evil age.
Our gracious God doesn’t leave us to rot in our sin. (Vs.5) The Lord God comes down to investigate what is going on. Man doesn’t build a tower to storm heaven’s gate - instead the Triune God condescends to be present among His creation. He comes down by the Holy Spirit in the flesh and blood of Jesus created in the womb of the Virgin Mary.
Now the Lord God acts to protect us from our own evil imagination. (Vs.6-7) Left to itself, the spirit of darkness leads us to walk in perversion, we are captives of sin and corruption - we cannot free ourselves.
The Holy Spirit now confuses human language. The gift of human language is preserved, but not it is confused. Instead of having one language, we are divided by language into people groups. Those people groups speaking the same language leave Babel and settle in different areas. There different genetic traits will protect them from too much or too little sun. In areas of greater solar radiation they will become a darker brown people, in areas of less sunlight they will become a lighter brown people. It is God’s gift of protecting us in our environments - we are all of one blood descended from Noah’s family.
God came down to save us from our sin. Born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit Jesus came to save us sinners from our sin. He took our sin into His flesh. He fulfilled the Law of God perfectly for us. He sacrificed His innocent flesh for us upon the altar of the cross. Three days later He physically rose from the dead for us. Because He lives, we live also! Forty days after His physical resurrection He ascended to rule over heaven and earth - the God/Man our Brother to save us in His Church by His Word. Ten days after His ascension God the Holy Spirit is poured out upon the Church in the preaching of Jesus.
III. At Babel the Lord God scattered mankind by confusing their language. (Vs.8-9) In the Church the Spirit of Truth gathers His Church as one people - the body of Christ. He doesn’t remove the blessing of different languages. Instead He unites us in the Truth - on Pentecost all people of different languages heard the wonderful works of God in Jesus in their own mother tongues.
We believe in one Holy Christian and apostolic Church. United in the common confession of the Faith the Holy Spirit taught and preserved the apostles in within Christ’s Church. God the Holy Spirit gathers us as one in Christ around Jesus’ Word - The Apostles’ Creed, The Nicene Creed, The Athanasian Creed. These words unite us as one Church by faith.
Rejoice in the true unity of Christianity. We are one as Jesus and the Father are one - the world never could see it, we do by the Holy Spirit through the Word. Divisions in Christendom are now necessary to expose Satan’s spiritual lies masquerading as Christianity. God the Holy Spirit preserve Jesus’ Church through baptismal water, forgiveness spoken, the Gospel preached, and the Supper fed.
Rejoice to boldly confess and believe: I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. Amen.
