Oculi - The Third Sunday In Lent              8-March-2026
Sermon Text: Luke 11:14-28
Sermon Theme: “See True Blessedness!” I. Pray - O Lord, Open My Lips!(vs.14-16) II. Rejoice - God’s Kingdom Is Come! (Vs.17-20) III. Fear Not - Your Foe Is Vanquished! (Vs.21-23) IV. Hear and Keep God’s Word! (Vs.24-28) by Rev. Nathan J. Rusert

I.N.R.I. “Psa 25:15 My eyes are ever toward the LORD, For He shall pluck my feet out of the net.” Oculi - where are your eyes? David fixes his eyes on his Son and his Lord - Jesus alone! Where are your eyes?
The people of Judah in Jeremiah’s day fixed their eyes on the beautiful Temple King Solomon constructed. They cried out, ‘The Temple of the Lord, The Temple of the Lord!” Trusting that physical building of God’s House would preserve the city of Jerusalem from all enemies. The Lord God sent Jeremiah to preach against His Temple - for the congregation idolized it rather than Him. History records, Jer 7:1-11 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, (2) "Stand in the gate of the LORD's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, 'Hear the word of the LORD, all you of Judah who enter in at these gates to worship the LORD!' " (3) Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. (4) Do not trust in these lying words, saying, 'The temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD are these.' (5) "For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if you thoroughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbor, (6) if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, or walk after other gods to your hurt, (7) then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever. (8) "Behold, you trust in lying words that cannot profit. (9) Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know, (10) and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, 'We are delivered to do all these abominations'? (11) Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of thieves in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it," says the LORD.” Jeremiah’s preaching against the Temple made the congregation want to execute him.
Where are your eyes? 75 years ago our brothers and sisters in Christ sacrificed to organize our congregation, to build this beautiful sanctuary - not to be a museum of gothic design, but a place of repentance, forgiveness, where we would gather around Emmanuel - our God with us - Jesus. That our Triune God graciously renew us weekly with His Word, baptism, absolution, preaching, prayer, and the Sacrament of the Altar. Are your eyes fixed on Jesus? Or like the congregation of Judah, do you just gather to go through the motions to do God a favor, then run back to following the world? Are you imitators of God, as beloved children, walking in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us? Or does the world have your tongue? Filthiness, foolish talking, crude joking - rather than the giving of thanks! Empty words bring God’s wrath upon the sons of disobedience. Where are your eyes? What is on your lips?
In the ancient church, Oculi Sunday, was the day on which adult candidates for baptism that would take place on the eve of the Easter were throughly examined. Did they know the Ten Commandments, The Apostles’ Creed, The Lord’s Prayer, The Promises Jesus gives in Holy Baptism, Confession and The Office of the Keys, and the Sacrament of the Altar. Did they know their duties and responsibilities in the holy orders of their vocations? Did they have a good reputation in the community? Could other Christians vow for their walk and life? Were they ready to renounce the devil? Their examination was followed by an exorcism and a renunciation of the devil and all his works. Their practice still echos in our confirmation rite: (LSB pg.272)
Dear Christian - today is examination Sunday for you! 2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified. Repent! Renounce the devil, the world, and your own sinful desires - look to Jesus! “See True Blessedness!” I. Pray - O Lord, Open My Lips!(vs.14-16) II. Rejoice - God’s Kingdom Is Come! (Vs.17-20) III. Fear Not - Your Foe Is Vanquished! (Vs.21-23) IV. Hear and Keep God’s Word! (Vs.24-28)I. Blind, deaf, and dumb describes our spiritual condition from conception. Born in Adam’s iniquity and sin. We cannot see, hear, or speak concerning the things of God. Man-made spirituality, pathways to the Divine, are nothing but lies and darkness leading to death and hell. Satan masquerades as an angel of light, and his false preachers pretend to be sent from God, but they all turn us away from Jesus to trust in them and our own abilities to find God’s kingdom on our own. The old corrupt spiritual nature in us, our old adam, despises God and His Word.
History records. (Vs.14) A demon has closed the mouth of this man. St. Matthew records further details: Mat 12:22 Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw.” Jesus, our Brother, is our Victor over Satan and his demon horde. He won us the Victory by His baptism, fasting, and temptation which we learned of on the first Sunday of Lent.
Jesus frees this man from demonic possession and his lips are opened to sing God’s praise. It is as David, the repentant adulterous murderer, taught us to pray: Psa 51:15 O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise.”  The formerly mute man speaks plainly. The crowds marvel saying, Mat 12:23 ....., "Could this be the Son of David?" Is Jesus the Promised Messiah? This is the response of the Holy Spirit opening our ears to hear the Gospel.
Beware, there is an evil spirit, the devil who swoops in to steal the Seed of Christ’s Word from your ears and heart. (Vs.15) The Pharisees instead of searching the Scriptures and testing Jesus’ Word and works - accuse Him of being in league with the devil. They mock the devil as being the “Lord of the flies” imagining that they can by their self-chosen religious ceremonies shoo him away as simply as a fly. The devil still deceives many that he is no threat to their salvation - beware! “The old evil foe Now means deadly woe; Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal. With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected;”(LSB 656:1,2)
Beware of the spirit of the world - it loves entertainment. (Vs.16) Instead of repentance and faith in Jesus, part of the crowd only wants to see another sign to itch their eyes. The spirit of worldly entertainment steals the Gospel away from those who have grown bored with hearing Jesus’ preaching in His Word. We are like them when we listen to preaching as any other entertainment, going away at the end of the year knowing as little of it as we did at the beginning. Our Lutheran Confessions warn: “Know, therefore, that you must be concerned not only about hearing, but also about learning and retaining God’s Word in memory. Do not think that this is optional for you or of no great importance. Think that it is God’s commandment, who will require an account from you [Romans 14:12] about how you have heard, learned, and honored His Word.”Large Catechism, 3rd Commandment.
Beware of the sin of “akadia (i.e., apathy or satisfaction)” thinking that you’ve heard enough preaching and teaching. Growing bored with Christ opening our lips to sing forth His praise, opting to stay home with the lie you’ll worship Him in our own way at your convenience. This is only wolfish Satan’s deception to steal you away from hearing the voice of your saving Shepherd, to separate you from the flock to devour you.
II. Today the Holy Spirit calls,“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves...” Listen!(vs.17) Jesus knows. He knows the thoughts and intents of your heart, the words on your lips even before you speak. Empty words only bring God’s wrath upon the sons of disobedience - men captive by the devil’s spiritual lies.
The devil isn’t God, he is a fallen created angel, but he is a master tactician and psychologist. The Pharisees thought they could flick the devil away like a harmless fly. They imagined they were building God’s kingdom in Jerusalem by their man made religious rules. (Vs.18) Jesus warns us. Satan’s demon hordes are well organized allied with the world and your own sinful flesh. The devil doesn’t fight against himself, but seeks to steal the baptized away from fixing their eyes on Jesus alone.
The Pharisees boasted of their power over the devil. (Vs.19) How could they accuse Jesus in being in league with Beelzebub, when their sons using God’s Word written by Moses and the Prophets also cast out demons? They were accusing themselves by accusing Jesus. They didn’t want Him to be the King of all Creation.
Repent! Confess Jesus is Lord - He is King of Creation. He is King of History! He is the King of the Church! (Vs.20) Rejoice! You don’t bring the kingdom of God about. War in the middle east doesn’t foretell the coming of Jesus’ kingdom. It is come! It came without our prayer. It came by God’s power and His Word of promise! God’s Kingdom comes where Jesus the King is present! Behold His power. He speaks His Word and water becomes a life giving water - rich in grace - renewing us by the Holy Spirit as the devil is cast out and we are freed from captivity - to live a life not of fear, but of faith. Stop cowering in fear! Jesus died for your sins. He rose to declare you forgiven! God is your Father, you are His beloved child, and He has given you the Holy Spirit to cling to Him. Rejoice the Kingdom of God has come upon you! Rejoice in this blessed reality: God's kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity.
III. Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? Fear not! Your foe is vanquished! Listen! (Vs.21) The devil is the strong man who stole mankind into slavery. He enslaves us with covetousness, sexual immorality, impurity, and all foolish filthy talking. The world and our flesh love the chains of his self-serving palace. He keeps us in spiritual darkness in the fear of death, until we are condemned with him and the fallen angels in hell.
Satan is the evil one - the #1 enemy of all mankind! Don’t fear! He is vanquished! (Vs.22) The prideful devil is overcome by the only begotten Son who came to us in humility. He humbled Himself to become our Brother, to shoulder our sin, to obey God the Father’s will to death upon the cross! Salvation is God the Father’s gift through His Son’s cross sealed to us by the Holy Spirit! Devil begone - Jesus has won the victory for me. It is clothed upon me by the Triune God in baptism in His Name. I am His - He saves me!
Live in your Victor! (Vs.23) Live in Jesus - He is The Truth! Apart from Jesus there is no spiritual light. In Jesus you gather. If you are captive of Satan you scatter. There are no grey areas of religion. You are either freed by grace through faith in Christ Jesus - He is in you - or you are a captive of the devil’s lies and pseudo-spiritualities. The devil will use all his deceptions to scatter you from Jesus. Learn from David to pray: Psa 25:1-2 To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul. (2) O my God, I trust in You; Let me not be ashamed; Let not my enemies triumph over me.IV. Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
Never go home from church empty! (Vs.24-26) This morning you cleaned house. You confessed the truth that you are a poor miserable sinner. You only deserve God’s wrath and eternal punishment. Then Jesus judged you - “I forgive you all your sin!” He spoke this reality into your ears. He will feed it to you at His table. His body and blood is given and shed FOR YOU - you are forgiven! Cling to His Word, His body and blood is your salvation. Turn your eyes ever to the Lord Jesus!
Do not deceive yourself that warming a pew on Sunday morning is enough Christianity for the week. If you go home empty, without the Word of God in your heart, on your lips, and in your life. The devil will deceive - making you comfortable as you stumble back to live in the world’s darkness. Repent! Eph 5:8-9 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (9) (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),
Be like the Virgin Mary! (Vs.27) A woman from the crowd wants to praise our Lord Jesus’ mother. Mary wanted no prayers directed to her. Her soul magnified the Lord Jesus - her Savior. Follow her example (vs.28). When the holy angel preached Jesus to her, she said, “Let it be to me according to your Word.” Elizabeth praised her for believing the Word of God. Luke records that Mary kept all these words about Jesus in her heart and pondered them. Mary’s last recorded words in the Gospel direct us to listen to her Son and Savior Jesus - Joh 2:5 .."Whatever He says to you, do it." You are blessed hearing Jesus’ Word - keeping it as the treasure of your heart, your home, your daily life. By the Holy Spirit’s grace fix your eyes daily upon Jesus. Daily renounce the devil. Daily be clothed with Jesus in His Word - in Him you are never be disqualified! Amen.
