Episode Notes

The God-Man

John 1:1-3, 14, 18 (NLT) In the beginning the Word already existed. The
Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He existed in the beginning

with God.
3 God created everything through him, and nothing was created except
through him.
14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full
of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of
the Father’s one and only Son.
18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is
near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.

5 things this teaches us about Jesus:

1. John taught the pre-existence of Jesus.
John 1:1-2 (NLT) In the beginning the Word already existed. The
Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He existed in the

beginning with God.

2. John alludes to the Trinity.

John 1:1 (NLT) ...The Word was WITH GOD...

3. John affirms the deity of Jesus.
John 1:1 (NLT) ...and the word WAS GOD.

4. John identified Jesus’ role as Creator.

John 1:3 (NLT) God created everything through him, and nothing
was created except through him.
5. John referred to the humanity of Jesus.

John 1:14 (NLT) So the Word became human and made his home
among us...

The Deity of Jesus

Phil 2:6 “Though he [Jesus] was God [theos], he did not think of equality
with God as something to cling to”

Witnesses to Christ’s Deity
● The “Theos” Factor
● The Equation Factor
● The Worship Factor
Matthew 28:9 And as they went, Jesus met them and greeted them. And
they ran to him, grasped his feet, and worshiped him.
Matthew 28:17 When they saw him, they worshiped him—but some of
them doubted!
Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest
honor and gave him the name above all other names,
10
that at the name
Hebrews 1:6 And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God
said, “Let all of God’s angels worship him.”

● The Sharing of Titles

The Humanity of Jesus

Hebrews 2:14-15 (NLT) Because God’s children are human beings—made
of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a
human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of
the devil, who had the power of death.

15 Only in this way could he set free

all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.
● Jesus experienced hunger (Mark 11:2), but God does not hunger
(Psalm 50:12).
● After strenuous travel, Jesus was tired (John 14:6), but God is never
tired (Isaiah 40:28)
● Jesus slept (Matthew 8:24), but God never sleeps (Psalm 121:4)
● Jesus was tempted (Hebrews 5:14), but God cannot be tempted
(James 1:13).
● Jesus died (John 19:30), but God cannot die (1 Timothy 6:16 NLT)
● Luke 2:40 states that “the child grew and became strong...” (NIV).
● A few verses later we read that “Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature
and in favor with God and all the people” (Luke 2:52 NLT).

Philippians 2:6-8 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with
God as something to cling to.
7
Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he
took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When
he appeared in human form,

8 he humbled himself in obedience to

2 John 7, 10 Many deceivers have gone out into the world. They deny that
Jesus Christ came in a real body. Such a person is a deceiver and an

antichrist. ...If anyone comes to your meeting and does not teach the truth
about Christ, don’t invite that person into your home or give any kind of
encouragement.”

The Death of Jesus

1 Corinthians 15:3 Christ died for our sins just as the scriptures said.

The Gospels devote about a third of their words to Jesus' final week.
Matthew 21–28 = 1⁄3 of the book
Mark 11–16 = 1⁄3 of the book
Luke 19–24 = 1⁄4
John 12–20 = nearly 1⁄4 of book (John 13–19 is devoted to one day = 1⁄3 of
book)

Why Jesus Died
1. Jesus’ death was pre-planned and intentional.
2. Jesus' death was voluntary.
3. Jesus’ death was substitutionary.
4. Jesus’ death was effective.

Why Jesus Came
1. Jesus came to reveal the Father.
John 14:9 Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.

Colossians 1:15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.

2. Jesus came to die.

3. Jesus came to give us an abundant life.

John 10:10 I’ve come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.

Other translations say:

“my purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

“I’ve come that they might have life and have it to the full.”

“I came so that they could have life indeed, so that they could live life to the fullest.”

“ I’ve come so that they may have life and have it in greater measure.”

“I came so that they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.”

“I came that they may have and enjoy life and have it in abundance, to the full, till it overflows.”
