Troubles Upon Troubles
May 19, 2026
Pastor Mike
The returning exiles faced intense opposition when rebuilding Jerusalem. Through lies, accusations, and political maneuvering, their enemies managed to stop the work for 16 years. Yet this episode reminds us that Satan's primary weapon is deception, our battles are spiritual in nature, and God is never caught by surprise. Even in delays and setbacks, God's purposes prevail.
Episode Notes
5-Day Devotional
Day 1: The Truth in the Midst of Lies
Reading: Job 1:6-22; Romans 8:16
Reading: Job 1:6-22; Romans 8:16
Devotional:
Satan's accusations against God's people are as old as time itself. In Job's story, we witness the enemy attacking a righteous man's integrity in God's very throne room. Today, the accuser still whispers lies about our worthiness, our motives, and God's faithfulness toward us.
Yet we have an unshakeable truth: the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are God's children. When accusations swirl around you—whether from external sources or your own doubts—anchor yourself in this reality. You are not defined by Satan's lies but by God's truth. The enemy may attack, but he cannot change your identity in Christ. Let the Spirit's testimony silence every false accusation today.

Day 2: Trusting God's Timing in Delays
Reading: Ezra 4:17-24; Genesis 50:15-21
Devotional:
The rebuilding of Jerusalem stopped for sixteen years—a devastating delay for God's people. Yet this pause wasn't defeat; it was part of God's sovereign plan. Joseph understood this principle perfectly when he told his brothers, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good."
The delays you're experiencing aren't evidence of God's absence but opportunities for His greater purpose to unfold. What feels like a setback may be God's setup for something beyond your imagination. King Artaxerxes left the door open for future restoration, just as God keeps doors open in your circumstances. Trust that God is never caught off guard by life's interruptions. Your delay is not your defeat.

Day 3: Strength in Weakness
Reading: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10; Acts 9:10-16
Devotional:
Paul's life exemplifies a powerful paradox: when we are weak, then we are strong. His imprisonments, beatings, and shipwrecks weren't obstacles to ministry but platforms for God's power. Like Paul, we're called to view our troubles not as setbacks but as opportunities for divine strength to shine through human frailty. The thorn in your flesh, the opposition you face, the weakness you feel—these are the very places where Christ's power rests upon you.
God told Paul he would suffer for His name's sake, yet through that suffering, the Gospel spread to the Gentiles. Your struggles have purpose. They refine your faith and showcase God's sufficiency. Embrace your weakness today; it's the gateway to experiencing God's strength.

Day 4: The Real Battle
Reading: Ephesians 6:10-18; Mark 14:53-59
Devotional:
Our struggles aren't ultimately against people, policies, or circumstances—they're against spiritual forces in heavenly places. Even at Jesus' trial, lying witnesses couldn't keep their stories straight because truth cannot be permanently suppressed by deception.
When you face opposition, remember you're in a spiritual battle that belongs to the Lord. The colleague who undermines you, the situation that seems impossible, the accusation that feels crushing—these are all part of a larger warfare. But here's the victory: you don't fight alone, and the battle isn't yours to win. Put on God's armor daily. Stand firm in truth. Pray without ceasing.
The enemy's tactics haven't changed, but neither has God's faithfulness. He fights for you.

Day 5: Faithful in the Wilderness
Reading: Exodus 16:1-18; James 1:2-4, 19
Devotional:
Israel's wilderness journey teaches us about troubles upon troubles. Despite God's miraculous deliverance from Egypt, they faced hunger, thirst, and enemies. They complained, yet God remained faithful—providing manna, water from rocks, and ultimate deliverance. Your wilderness season may feel endless, but it's not purposeless.
Like the Israelites, you're learning dependence on God's daily provision. When troubles pile up, resist the temptation to complain and instead choose trust. Be quick to listen for God's voice, slow to speak in frustration, and slow to anger. Each trial refines your faith, strengthening your reliance on Him.
The wilderness isn't your destination; it's your training ground. God is preparing you for the promised land ahead.
