Loving One Another Gods Way

Series: 1st Epistle of John

This episode explores the critical distinguishing characteristic of followers of Christ—the love of God radiating from within them to a world lost in darkness. Drawing from 1 John 3:11-24, the message emphasizes that genuine Christian love is not merely an emotion but action born from our eternal identity as children of God. The episode contrasts the destructive hatred exemplified by Cain with the sacrificial love demonstrated by Christ, challenging believers to move beyond religious rhetoric to visible acts of love and sacrifice. It emphasizes that God's love is unconditional, given while we were still lost in darkness, and that this same love should characterize our relationships with others. The message concludes by establishing three foundations for loving God's way: believing in Christ, obeying and doing what pleases Him, and being filled with the Holy Spirit who assures us of our right fellowship with God.

Episode Notes

5-Day Devotional

Day 1: The Message From the Beginning

Reading: 1 John 3:11-15

Devotional: From the very beginning, God's message has been clear: we should love one another. This isn't merely a suggestion but the distinguishing mark of Christ's followers. The tragic story of Cain and Abel reminds us that hatred is spiritual death, while love brings life. When we harbor bitterness, resentment, or anger toward others, we align ourselves with darkness rather than light. Jesus taught that hatred in our hearts is equivalent to murder. Today, examine your heart honestly. Are there people you struggle to love? Remember, genuine love isn't just an emotion—it's a choice to value others as God values them. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any hidden bitterness and replace it with Christ's compassion.

Day 2: Christ, Our Ultimate Example

Reading: Philippians 2:5-11; 1 John 4:9-10

Devotional: Jesus didn't cling to His divine privileges but emptied Himself, taking on human form and dying a criminal's death for us. This is the ultimate demonstration of love—not that we loved God first, but that He loved us while we were still in darkness. Christ's sacrificial love sets the standard for how we should love others. We're called to have the same attitude, the same willingness to lay down our lives—our pride, our comfort, our resources—for our brothers and sisters. This week, identify one way you can demonstrate Christ-like sacrifice. Perhaps it's forgiving someone who hurt you, serving someone who can't repay you, or giving generously to meet another's need. True love always costs us something.

Day 3: Love in Action, Not Just Words

Reading: 1 John 3:16-18; James 2:14-17

Devotional: Faith without works is dead, and love without action is merely empty words. John challenges us directly: if we have the world's goods and see someone in genuine need yet close our hearts to them, how can God's love truly dwell in us? Real love moves us beyond religious rhetoric to tangible expressions of care. It's easy to say "I love you" or "I'll pray for you," but God calls us to back up our words with sacrifice. Look around your community this week. Who needs practical help? Perhaps someone needs a meal, assistance with bills, help with yard work, or simply companionship. Don't just feel compassion—act on it. Let your love be demonstrated through your hands and feet.

Day 4: Confident in God's Greater Truth

Reading: 1 John 3:19-22; Romans 8:31-39

Devotional: Self-doubt and guilt can paralyze our faith, but here's the liberating truth: God is greater than our feelings, and He knows everything. Satan whispers, "Are you really saved? Does God truly love you?" But if you've confessed Christ as Lord and surrendered your life to Him, you are His. Period. Our confidence doesn't rest on our performance but on God's unchanging character and finished work through Christ. When doubt creeps in, return to Scripture's promises rather than your fluctuating emotions. God's Word stands firmer than any feeling. Today, write down three biblical truths about your identity in Christ and speak them aloud when doubt attacks. Walk in bold confidence, knowing nothing can separate you from God's love.

Day 5: Living in the Spirit's Power

Reading: 1 John 3:23-24; Galatians 5:16-25

Devotional: The Christian life isn't about trying harder to love others through willpower alone—it's about surrendering to the Holy Spirit who lives within us. God's commandment is twofold: believe in Jesus Christ and love one another. We cannot accomplish either in our own strength. The Spirit's presence is our concrete assurance that we belong to God and remain in fellowship with Him. When we walk in the Spirit, we naturally produce the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. This week, begin each morning by consciously inviting the Holy Spirit to fill you, guide you, and empower you to love the unlovable. Notice how God transforms your perspective and gives you supernatural capacity for genuine love.
