1 John 2:7-17 Its a Family Affair

Pastor Mike
This sermon explores 1 John 2:7-17, emphasizing that true knowledge of God leads to deep abiding in Him and a natural desire to obey His commandments. The Apostle John presents both an "old" and "new" commandment—the timeless call to love one another, now fulfilled and exemplified in Jesus Christ. The sermon traces the Christian journey through three stages of spiritual growth (children, fathers, and young men), highlighting how forgiveness, deep knowledge of God, and victory over evil characterize progressive sanctification. Central to the message is the distinction between loving the world and loving God—Christians cannot serve both. The transformative power of Christ's love should make believers stand out in a world filled with conflict and hatred, as they become lights shining in dark places through acts of compassion and unity.
Episode Notes
Living in the Light of Love
Day 1: The Timeless Command of Love
Reading: Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 22:37-40; John 13:34-35
Devotional: God's command to love is both ancient and eternally new. From the Torah to Christ's earthly ministry, love has always been central to God's design for humanity. What makes this command "new" is Jesus—the living embodiment of perfect love.
In Christ, we don't just receive instructions about love; we witness love incarnate. Today, reflect on how Jesus demonstrated love through sacrifice, compassion, and service. The same Spirit that empowered Christ now dwells in you, enabling you to love beyond human capacity.
Ask yourself: How am I reflecting Christ's love to those around me? Remember, true Christianity isn't about head knowledge—it's about a heart transformed by love, actively caring for others as Christ cared for us.
Day 2: Walking in the Light
Reading: 1 John 2:9-11; Ephesians 5:8-14
Devotional: Light and love are inseparable in the Christian life. To claim fellowship with God while harboring hatred toward fellow believers is to walk in spiritual darkness. John's message is clear: our love for one another reveals whether we truly abide in God's light.
Darkness blinds us to truth and causes us to stumble, but love illuminates our path and builds up the faith community. Consider your relationships within the body of Christ. Are there brothers or sisters you've allowed bitterness or unforgiveness to affect? Today, choose to be a light-bearer. Respond to rudeness with kindness, to offense with grace.
These aren't merely nice gestures—they're spiritual acts that transform darkness into light, demonstrating God's power alive and active in your life.
Day 3: Stages of Spiritual Growth
Reading: 1 John 2:12-14; 2 Peter 3:18
Devotional: John addresses three stages of spiritual maturity: children who know forgiveness, fathers who possess deep knowledge of God, and young men who have overcome evil through God's Word. Every believer begins as a spiritual child, marveling at the gift of forgiveness.
As we mature, we grow in intimate knowledge of our eternal Father and develop spiritual strength through Scripture. Where are you in your spiritual journey? Perhaps you're experiencing the fresh wonder of salvation, or maybe you're mentoring others from years of walking with God.
Regardless of your stage, growth requires one constant: love. Each level of maturity calls us deeper into Christ-centered love for God and others.
Commit today to the next step in your growth—whether that's studying God's Word more intentionally or mentoring a younger believer.
Day 4: Choosing Your Allegiance
Reading: 1 John 2:15-17; James 4:4; Romans 12:2
Devotional: We cannot serve two masters. John confronts us with an uncomfortable truth: friendship with the world makes us enemies of God. This isn't about possessions or money themselves, but about where we place our affections.
The world's value system—built on selfish desires, pride, and temporary pleasures—stands in direct opposition to God's eternal purposes. What captures your heart's attention? Social media validation? Material success? Cultural approval?
These things are passing away, but whoever does God's will lives forever. Today, examine your loyalties honestly. Are your attitudes toward money, success, and relationships aligned with worldly standards or Kingdom values? Surrender those worldly affections to God.
Choose to be tethered to Him rather than to a world that cannot last. True freedom is found only in Christ.
Day 5: Go Light Your World
Reading: Matthew 5:14-16; Acts 2:42-47; Philippians 2:14-16
Devotional: You are called to be light in dark places. The early church understood this, sharing everything and caring for one another in ways that amazed their surrounding culture. Their love wasn't theoretical—it was tangible, practical, and transformative.
Today, you carry the same mission. In grocery stores, traffic, workplaces, and neighborhoods, you encounter people walking in darkness. Will you respond with frustration or with grace? Every interaction is an opportunity to reflect Christ. Pray for the aggressive driver. Smile at the person who cuts in line. Seek out the hopeless and confused.
These aren't small acts—they're Kingdom declarations that God's love is real and active. Carry your candle into the darkness.
Let your light shine before others so they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Transform your world, one loving act at a time.
