The books of First Book of Kings and Second Book of Kings tell the story of Israel’s decline after the reign of King David and King Solomon. The kingdom divides into the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah, and the spiritual direction of each king shapes the nation’s future. Many rulers lead the people into idolatry, while prophets such as Elijah and Elisha call them back to repentance. Because the people continually reject God, Israel eventually falls to Assyria and Judah later falls to Babylon, showing the serious consequences of turning away from the Lord.
