Purging the Perverted Temple WATCH US ON YOUTUBE LIVE @ http://www.youtube.com/gracechurch-slus/live https://www.podbean.com/lsw/Grace1?lsid=1ReN3uaAuDq Matthew 21:12-17 12 Jesus went into the temple complex and drove out all those buying and selling in the temple. He overturned the money changers’ tables and the chairs of those selling doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, My house will be called a house of prayer. But you are making it a den of thieves!” 14 The blind and the lame came to Him in the temple complex, and He healed them. 15 When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonders that He did and the children shouting in the temple complex, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant 16 and said to Him, “Do You hear what these children are saying?” “Yes,” Jesus told them. “Have you never read: You have prepared[f] praise from the mouths of children and nursing infants?” 17 Then He left them, went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there. I. Christ’s Divine Mission (v.12) Jesus deliberately goes to the temple, not Roman strongholds. His concern is worship, not politics or military power. Judgment begins at the house of God (cf. 1 Peter 4:17). For the time has come for judgment to begin with God’s household, and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God? Application: True transformation begins with right worship. II. Christ’s Divine Authority (v.12) Jesus drives out buyers and sellers without resistance. He overturns tables and halts temple commerce. Religious leaders are powerless before His authority. Application: Christ has absolute authority over corrupt religion. III. Christ’s Commitment to Divine Scripture (v.13) Jesus quotes Isaiah 56:7 – the temple as a house of prayer. He quotes Jeremiah 7:11 – a den of robbers. His actions are grounded in God’s Word. Application: True worship aligns with Scripture, not convenience. IV. Christ’s Divine Compassion (v.14) The blind and lame come to Jesus after the cleansing. He heals them with tenderness and mercy. Compassion balances His righteous anger. Application: True worship expresses love and care for the needy. V. Christ’s Divine Power (v.14–15) Miracles authenticate His identity as Messiah. Healing demonstrates God’s creative power. Even His enemies witness undeniable evidence. Application: Christ still has power to restore lives.
