He came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7 He told the vineyard worker, ‘Listen, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it even waste the soil?’ 8 “But he replied to him, ‘Sir,[b] leave it this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. 9 Perhaps it will bear fruit next year, but if not, you can cut it down.’” I. Explanation of the Parable 1. The Owner • Represents God – rightful authority and expectation of fruit. 2. The Fig Tree • Symbolizes people blessed with opportunity but producing no fruit. 3. The Vineyard Keeper • Picture of mercy and intercession. 4. The Delay • One more year – grace extended, but not unlimited. II. Key Spiritual Lessons • God expects fruit, not mere proximity to blessing. • Time is a gift, not a guarantee. • Mercy delays judgment but does not remove accountability. III. Personal Application • Are we producing spiritual fruit? • How are we responding to God’s patience? • Today is an opportunity for repentance and growth. IV Conclusion • Living on borrowed time is a warning and an invitation. • God’s grace gives space to respond—do not waste it.
